Slow decoration is a new trend in interior design that we can all apply. Living in the era of home renovation TV shows, we’re used to the idea that at the end of a project there’s a big “reveal” where every little detail is perfectly in place. The decoration process has a clear beginning and end, and only when you reach the final stage, you can sigh that your home is “done”. While this may work if you have the budget of a major TV network and a team of professionals working to decorate your home, it’s not very practical in real life.

Slow decoration – a trend that focuses on spending time when furnishing the space, aims to provide a more realistic and sustainable alternative.

What is slow decoration?

Slow decorating, as you might have guessed from the name, is done slowly. It rejects the idea of impulse buys and one-off room transformations and instead prioritizes thoughtful purchases, realizing that it can take longer to find the right pieces of furniture and decor.

It also encourages buying used or reusing items you already have, rather than buying new. That’s why slow decorating can require an extra dose of patience. But if you think that sounds like procrastination, the difference comes down to intent.

You should be actively gathering inspiration, shopping and looking for what best suits your space and style, not just settling for what you can buy quickly and cheaply at the last minute.

Slow decorating in itself makes your shopping habits more sustainable, especially if you buy second-hand items. And because you only buy things you love and believe will work in the space, you eliminate the waste that comes with buying items you’ll only keep for a few months before they break or go out of style. It also gives you more time to take on DIY projects you might not otherwise consider if you’re in a hurry. Sometimes a coat of paint or a new fabric is all you need to give a second life to pieces that might otherwise end up in the scrap yard.

Mapping out the decorating process gives you time to figure out exactly what you like and what works in your space. Just because you like how something looks in another home or online, doesn’t mean it will work in yours. Slow decorating allows you to take all of the above into account.

How to apply slow home decoration

Don’t rush the process

The whole concept revolves around slowing down. In a world where time is money and hustle is constantly romanticized, this might sound difficult. However, allowing yourself to relax and intentionally take a no-nonsense approach to design is important to creating a space you’ll love for years to come.

Accept unfinished

Things may seem unfinished for a while, but that’s okay. Relax and start thinking of your home as a work in progress. Instead of focusing only on the finished product, enjoy the process of customizing it to your specific wants and needs. When the interior finally reflects your unique tastes and personality, the feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment will be worth all the time spent.

Plan ahead

You can make plans regarding your budget as well as the items you need without buying before you are ready. By planning ahead, you can shop with confidence. However, at the same time, it’s important to remember that plans can change, and allowing yourself to be flexible is key to the look of your ideal space.
