Meet Dr. Gay Hitler, from Circleville, Ohio by the father of George Washington Hiller, a man who from this perspective has one of the most interesting and inappropriate names ever.
He was born in 1882, when the word gay was not used for homosexuals, but meant a cheerful person. The term itself began to appear as we know it only in the twenties of the last century, and in 1951 it appeared in the dictionary.
The thirties come, and the most famous Hitler, the one in Germany, turns out to be very bad at spelling. Originally, Adolf’s last name was spelled Hiedler, but his signature was Hitler, thus ruining the lives of many Americans of German origin who had that last name. Adolf ruined many other lives, but that’s another topic.
Gay Hitler was a dentist in his hometown, and well liked by his entire family. He died the day after the end of the war, in 1946, and the whole family was so beloved that at that time they even got a street in Ohio. Of course, the name was later removed when they realized the possibility of misuse.
Poor Gay Hitler died as a dental star, whose name denoted a happy man of German origin, only for circumstances and time to make his name a symbol of sexuality and an evil dictator. Everything he wasn’t.
Over time, his death certificate became a viral thing on the internet, because we have to admit, it really is a little funny.
