Actress Emma Stone has revealed that she actually prefers that people don’t call her that, as it’s not her real name.
She said that she would prefer others to address her by the name she was given at birth, the BBC reports.
“That would be very nice.” I want to be Emily,” she stated.
Stone, 35, the star of the film “Less Creatures,” for which she won an Oscar for best actress, told The Hollywood Reporter that she gets people she works with to call her Emily when she gets to know them better.
She said she changed the name because Emily was already “busy” in her acting environment.
However, she said during the interview that she “freaked out a few years ago” because she doesn’t use her real name.
“For some reason, I felt like I couldn’t do it anymore,” she said.
She said her co-star Nathan Fielder calls her Em, which is easier and a way to bridge to her real name.
Back in 2018, the actress said that the reason she chose the name Emma was her favorite Spice Girl Emma Bunton.
Stone isn’t the only one who changed her name because someone was already using it in the acting world.
Actor and former star of Doctor Who (Doctor Who) David Tennant changed his stage name at the age of 16, because someone in his acting environment was already using his real name, David McDonald.
He chose the new name while flipping through a music magazine and saw Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant.
Meanwhile, Canadian singer The Weeknd also changed his stage name, dropping the “e” because there is already a band in Canada called The Weeknd, and he wanted to avoid copyright issues.
American actress and director Elizabeth Banks also had to change her name, because there was already Elizabeth Mitchell, which is her real name, registered with the Screen Actors Guild.
“So I made a list in alphabetical order, and Banks was the first last name on it.” I called the Screen Actors Guild and they said that name was available, so I told them – ‘I’ll take it’. I just wanted it to end,” she said.
