Alain Delon is a French legend and world cinema, but even though he never appeared in Serbian films, the connection with Serbia could have cost him a lot.

Today, Alain Delon is under “enhanced guardianship” according to the decision of a judge for the protection of vulnerable persons, after he suffered a stroke in 2019. There is a desire in him to be euthanized, but for now there is no progress in that direction.

Delon established his stellar career with hit films in the 60s and 70s. He arrived in Yugoslavia in 1962 to shoot a film about Marco Polo. There he met a Belgrader, a guy from the street, whom he took with him to Paris after filming. In question was Miloš Milošević, who became Delon’s bodyguard.

Milosevic stayed in that position for a short time because he tried his luck in Hollywood. But he introduced Delon to his successor, Stevica Marković, who became much more famous as Delon’s employee and is still remembered in Paris, but by few.

Stevan Marković was a native of Belgrade, and he spent his youth in the Belgrade neighborhood of Savamala. His childhood friends said after his death that he was prone to physical confrontations, but given how many stories are attached to his name, everything is taken with a grain of salt.

Marković lived on the ground floor of the actor’s house in Paris. Allen offered him minor roles in films, but Marković did not take advantage of those opportunities. The money he earned was spent mostly on gambling and going out, which bothered the Delon couple. One of the most intriguing details of this story is the alleged affair that Stevan had with Natalie.

As Delon was one of the most attractive men of that era, it didn’t matter to him that his wife cheated on him with anyone, especially not with a migrant, and many believe that the actor never forgot that to Marković.

First, in 1966, Miloš Milošević was found dead in the mansion of actor Mickey Rooney. It was speculated that the actor’s wife Barbara was cheating with Miloš. His body was then transferred to the New Cemetery in Belgrade, and it was the beginning of a series of murders.

Allegedly, in 1968, the Delons broke off their cooperation with Marković by offering him a severance package from the sale of Allen’s old house in Messina Avenue, which he did not want to accept, so he started blackmailing them.

It is assumed that the controversial Serb was the lover of many married French women whose partners were very influential. It is said that he was able to take photos of his mistresses in objectionable poses and then send those pictures to their husbands asking for money so that the public would not see the lascivious pictures.

Officially, on September 22, 1968, Stevan Marković got into a taxi where the man who killed him was waiting for him. Witnesses first recognized the suspect, and then changed their statements.

After samples were taken from Marković’s body, it was determined that he was a Yugoslav emigrant, and that he was not killed by a blow with a hard object, as was announced at the beginning, but was killed by a shot from a weapon used by professional killers.

After the news of Marković’s death reached the media, two witnesses appeared, one was a taxi driver, and the other was his friend who was the last person to see him alive.

The newspaper “Figaro” then published an anonymous letter in which it is stated that high state officials and former members of the government, who attended the orgies organized by Marković in Alain Delon’s house, were involved in everything. A Yugoslav named Akov had evidence of that, the article pointed out.

Explicit photos of Claude Pompidou, the wife of former French Prime Minister Georges Pompidou, were also mentioned.

Alain Delon was questioned several times regarding the murder, his alibi was suspected, but there was no solid evidence linking him to the death of Marković. The famous actor denied guilt from the beginning.

The whole case has remained a mystery even after more than five decades, and the only thing that is certain is that the photos from the adult parties did not exist, so it is assumed that the case was designed to cast a shadow on the presidential candidacy of Pompidou, who later won power .

Alain Delon on “The Dick Cavett Show”:

There are several books and documentaries about the “Marković Affair”. Despite the intention, a feature film on the subject was never made. Film director Yves Boase once said: “I did not manage to make a film about the ‘Marković Affair’ even though I really wanted to and had been collecting documentation for years.” The pressures were so strong from all sides that it was simply impossible. All evidence was removed, nothing could be officially confirmed, and Alain Delon once said to me: ‘You will be a dead man if you make that film’. It was not a threat, but a statement — it was known what an earthquake would be caused by the revelation of a murder in which the entire political establishment of France was involved, as well as the secret services of several countries. Dangerous”.

The first book on this topic was written by the famous Serbian journalist, writer and screenwriter Dušan Savković. It was the then cult novel “Gorilla”, published in 1974. He later wrote sequels to this novel, “Gorilla 2” (1980) and “Embrace Paris” (1982).
