The incident in which four young men from Vukovar attacked a car with Sombor license plates, which happened on November 18 in Nuštra, on the day when Remembrance Day was celebrated, once again showed that intolerance between Serbs and Croats is still present in this part of the region.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack took place around 10 am, at the same time that the Column of Remembrance was starting in Vukovar. The video shows how four young men from the Audi kicked and punched the car that was driving in front of them, and everything took place in the presence of the police, who did not react to the attack.
The witness who filmed the incident said that he was driving slowly in a line of cars that day, when he noticed an Audi with Vukovar registration and two young men peeking out from the back seat. According to him, they suddenly changed direction and improperly entered the other lane, in which there were passengers from Sombor.
After the attackers stopped in front of a vehicle with Serbian license plates, they started gesticulating, honking and hitting the vehicle, and then they started cursing, banging on the car and even tore off the rearview mirror. The video shows that one of the young men is wearing a black T-shirt with the coat of arms of the HOS.
It is shocking that the police were present during the attack but did not react to the violence. The driver of the attacked car stepped on the gas and moved away from the attackers, but the question is whether the attack would have continued if the police van had not appeared. However, the policemen did not react either, but went to the car with Serbian license plates. Another police car was nearby, but they did not react.
It remains unclear why the police did not act against the attackers, who clearly had nationalist motives. This incident once again shows that it is necessary to work on reconciliation and coexistence of all citizens, regardless of their nationality.
