Doctors and technicians themselves arranged the psychiatric department in the Pozarevac hospital

Brightly colored animals and flowers moved to the walls of the psychiatry department at the Požarevac General Hospital on the initiative of the employees of this department, and to the delight of the patients.

“While I was doing that, patients passed by me and gave me ideas, and they all expressed their desire to have some birds painted in color, not just silhouettes of birds, they were looking for nature. And little by little, with their ideas, we made this picture that’s on the wall now,” says the applied artist Maria Vojisavljević.

They also created a small library for their patients and brought books from their homes, they provided television and board games, and the hospital hired an occupational therapist for the first time and provided some of the resources they had been looking for for years.

“By the fact that the patients will be in a climate they like, they will have more activities throughout the day, they will not just lie in beds like in all possible psychiatric hospitals in this country, they will probably be able to recover faster and that is one of our the ultimate goal is for them to recover as quickly and as well as possible and to be here as little as possible.” Dr. Vlada Ivanovic points out, head of psychiatry General Hospital Požarevac.

A rest room for medical technicians was also arranged.

“Through this, we made it easier for ourselves to stay here, because many of us spend up to 12 hours, which is a lot. We all spend one third of our lives at the workplace.” says Pepica Nešić, medical technician.

The employees of the psychiatry funded their own initiative.

“This is a team effort and it is something that my department can boast of. It was not difficult because all employees were really interested, they all wanted to participate in improving the quality of work.” emphasizes Tanja Milenkovic, head nurse of the psychiatry department.

The next step is painting the patient rooms, with the hope of providing commodes and maybe even windows and doors with the help of donors. As they say, to make the always neglected psychiatry more humane.
