Colorful salamanders went “for a walk” due to the frequent rains of recent days in Belgrade.

These amphibians live with us, hidden in green urban oases. However, some citizens of Belgrade did not care when they saw a black amphibian with yellow patterns on the street. According to experts, they are not dangerous, but fellow citizens should avoid them, not to pick them up because of the substances they release.

They benefit from a lot of rain

The salamander has a black body and yellow spots, so when it appears in nature, people can spot it because of its striking colors. Their body is 12 to 17 centimeters long. This amphibian lives in Western, Central and Southern Europe. When the weather is nice, the citizens will not see it, but heavy rainfall favors them and then they become more visible.

In the previous days, photos of salamanders were circulated on social networks, and several fellow citizens reported that they had also seen them. A citizen of Belgrade found this colorful amphibian on the street in the neighborhood of Cvetanova ćuprija. After that, citizens reported that they had spotted them in other parts of the city as well. Some even thought it was a runaway pet. They are not dangerous, they live near water, and according to experts, the rain that fell favored them.

– The colorful salamander lives in Belgrade and is found in places where there is a lot of greenery and where there is water – Katarina Breka from the Faculty of Biology told “Novosti”.

– I see that some people thought it was an exotic animal, but it wasn’t, the rain tricked them. Citizens are advised not to touch them as they release substances through their skin to protect themselves from predators. In case the citizens touch them, they should not touch their mouth, nose and eyes, because they might feel a burning sensation or get redness afterwards. They are not dangerous, but it is definitely necessary to wash your hands in case someone touches them.

If citizens find them on the street, it would be good to throw them in the grass, but washing your hands afterwards is mandatory. As Katarina explained to us, they are not an unusual phenomenon in our city. However, due to the lack of green areas and the increasing urbanization of the city, the citizens of Belgrade have less and less opportunity to see them.
