On Friday, May 3, Serbia commemorates the anniversary of the most tragic event in our recent history. On that day last year, nine pupils of Vladislav Ribnikar Elementary School and a security guard were killed in a mass shooting. The school, the Working Group and the authorities in the Ministry of Education are preparing a special program to commemorate the lost lives of children and school guards.
At the recently held session of the Council of Parents, the plan to mark the anniversary of the mass murder of students and workers of “Ribnikar” was presented, and the members of the Multidisciplinary Team who designed the anniversary and are otherwise in charge of creating the future Memorial Center were also present. The details of the entire program will be agreed upon in the coming days, but it is already known how the program will roughly look like.
As for the anniversary itself, an art installation will be installed at the entrance from Kralja Milutin Street – called “Veil of Weeping”, which will cover the entire width of the school building.
Below that, as planned, citizens will be able to lay flowers and light candles.
This information was confirmed by Bratislav Tošković, architect and member of the Working Group for the establishment of the Memorial Center.
“The whole event on May 3 is designed to go down King Milutin Street all the way to Tašmajdan, where it will then continue with the activities on Tašmajdan. This is a very complex matter, and it’s not just about wanting to remember that painful event, but that we want to implement it in every pore of our society so that such things don’t happen in the future,” Tošković told RTS.
As he said, these activities start from the most painful point in Ulica Kralja Milutin.
By the way, the aforementioned installation requires certain construction works, which have already begun in Ulica Kralja Milutin. We are talking about minor works, and as our reporter saw on the ground, the structure has already been installed. It is necessary to fix the supporting columns in concrete. The plan is also to organize some kind of Forum, i.e. dialogue, exchange of messages, words of support…

One of the proposals presented at the Working Group is that at 8:40 a.m. sirens should be activated throughout Serbia with the explanation that the families of those killed have the feeling that the tragedy has been forgotten in society and they need society to wake up.
It is also possible that the sound of the siren will be replaced by the sound of children crying, which would suddenly become quieter.
However, these proposals are still under consideration, and the Ministry of Education has requested opinions from professional institutions, including the Institute for Mental Health.
Program on Taš and in Mitićeva rupa
Later in the day, some kind of cultural and artistic program is planned, which will include the performance of compositions by Serbian composers on Tašmajdan.
The school “Vladislav Ribnikar” itself is planning activities called “Spoonful of Love” in Mitićeva rupa park that day, May 3 in Slavia, in the period from 5 to 6 p.m. when all students who want and are able to participate in making a large drawing are invited , to the extent they want. More information about this event will be announced in the coming days.
The reconstruction of “Ribnikar” is pending
The “Vladislav Ribnikar” school is still waiting for complete reconstruction. The only thing that is certain so far is that the students will be in this school building from autumn until the works finally start. In parallel with that, the Working Group is working on the renovation of the Memorial Center.
Let us remind you that on May 3, KK, (14) entered “Ribnikar” and fired shots from a pistol. killed nine peers and a school guard. He injured five other schoolmates and a history teacher.
