The dog that was saved by train driver Miša Radivojević was tied to the rails

– It is a section of the railway that is being renovated. There are reduced speeds. It happened at the exit from the station itself, through which, according to regulations, the train moves at a reduced speed. The dog was lucky that we left the station at a lower speed than usual. The prescribed speed through the station is now 10 kilometers per hour, and already on the open track it is 30 kilometers per hour. The stopping distance for a composition of about 1,000 tons, for the speed at which we were moving, is about 100 meters – Radivojević begins the story for “Blic”.

Driver Miša Radivojević in the locomotive he is driving

He says that he was not alone in the locomotive, but that his fellow driver, Jovana Stojanović, was with him.

– She is Jovan’s colleague noticed at about 500 meters that something was standing in the track. It is the duty of the train driver to observe non-stop for safety reasons, because a person and a child, as well as an animal, can be injured on the railway. She warned me that something was on the line. I reduced my speed to as low as possible and as we approached I saw that two dogs were on the track! As I started to play, one ran away and the other one stayed – explains the big-hearted train driver for “Blic”.

According to him, the train stopped a meter away from the animal that they first thought was injured. When Misha played the whistle again, the dog got up and then they saw the horror – yes tied to the rail with a chain!

Machine driver Miša Radivojević is a big animal lover, he is in the picture with his dogs

– He wanted to run away but he couldn’t. My colleague was about to get off when we noticed two men on the left. She started yelling if they knew who had tied up the dog. They were around 30, 40 years old. The elder pretended not to know anything. He said, “There’s nothing on the track.” When I started yelling that I was going to call the police, the younger person started to untie the dog from the tracks – says Misha for “Blic”.

The dog probably tightened the chain a little more out of fear, so the unknown man needed more time to untie it.

He ate food between the rails

– It caught my eye, if the dog didn’t know him, he might have attacked him, but he was completely calm, waiting for her to untie him. Next to the dog, food was left between the tracks, some skin that he had eaten. It was probably put there on purpose to distract him so he wouldn’t move off the track until the train hit him. I won’t lie, maybe those people who were standing there didn’t tie the dog to the rails, maybe it was a coincidence that they were there. But it is also a fact that the dog did not react while he was untying it. As soon as he drove him away, the dog ran away – remembers Misha. He had to continue moving immediately because due to regulations it is not allowed to stay on the track so he does not know where the dog went.

It looks like a missing Malinois dog

– I received a call from a girl whose boyfriend lost a raspberry dog three or four months ago, and she sent me a picture. I saw the dog briefly, but it could be that malino because it has a similar collar, almost the same. It’s just that this dog is quite starved, it probably lived in some bad conditions after its disappearance – says Misha.

Adopted already one dog rescued by the railway

Misha is a big animal lover and has two dogs. One of them was adopted and was also found earlier by the railway.

Train driver Miša Radivojević with a dog he adopted earlier and which was also rescued near the railway

– We were traveling from Niš to Dimitrovgrad, in the town of Dolac, someone threw out a dog near the station, the police station kept it, but she didn’t have the conditions to keep it. I was sorry so I took it. To this day I keep it together with my dog that I already had. I love animals. I also take care of fish, I took care of a rabbit… You can imagine the trauma it would have been if I stepped on that dog. Not everyone reacts the same way, but for us train drivers, it’s a big stress – Misha confides.

Praise for Misha, condemnation for the person who tied up the dog
