Serbia is the country with the biggest jump in the happiness index among the population in the period from 2010 to today, according to the World Happiness Report.

The reports showed that, compared to previous years, there was a dizzying rise on the happiness ladder, and this is also evidenced by the ranking of countries, which shows that in just the last two years we have jumped on the list by an incredible 69 places.

Behind us on the list are Bulgaria, Latvia, Congo, Romania, China, Georgia, Lithuania, the Philippines and Togo.

Namely, on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, a new World Report on Happiness was published, which includes the results of research on the life satisfaction of Serbian residents.

According to the results of that report, in the period between 2021 and 2023, Serbia recorded the biggest jump on the annual well-being barometer among 143 countries, increasing its position by 69 places compared to the previous research period from 2006 to 2010.

The young are the happiest

The authors of the research, conducted by “Gallup” in cooperation with the University of Oxford, the Welfare Research Center and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, state that this result is partly a consequence of Serbia’s high position on the list of the happiest nations in the category of young people under thirty. Young people from Serbia took third place in the world, right behind Lithuania and Israel.

However, the elderly “spoil” that average and in the general score, Serbia, in the period from 2021 to 2023, ranks 37th on the list of the happiest countries.

What is the reason for the jump in happiness in Serbia?

Serbia leads the list of 12 Eastern European countries whose average happiness index jumped by 20 percent in the last decade.

In the same period, the Serbian economy “doubled” to the figure of 80 billion dollars, as well as the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, which also doubled and jumped to 9,538 US dollars per capita.

Who are less fortunate in the world

Young people across North America and Western Europe are less happy than their parents, new research has found. The sense of well-being among people under the age of 30 has fallen so much that the US has dropped out of the list of the 20 happiest nations. Young Britons are unhappier than young people in the so-called Kosovo, Moldova and even El Salvador, a country with a high homicide rate.

On the other hand, the over-60s in Great Britain are among the 20 happiest older generations in the world, while America would be tenth by that criterion alone.

Experts do not reveal the exact causes of these changes, but believe they are linked to growing concerns about social networks, income inequality, the housing crisis and fears of war and climate change.

Finland is still the happiest country in the world, and the other Nordic countries – Denmark, Iceland and Sweden – are also highly ranked. Norway ranks seventh. Finland has been at the top for seven years, and the criteria that contributed to this include healthy life expectancy, high GDP per capita, social support, low corruption, high trust in institutions, generosity in the community and freedom in making key life decisions. Israel took fifth place, followed by the Netherlands.
