Job seekers had the opportunity yesterday to go to Dom omladine, where the twelfth employment fair “Top Job” was held, and to find the one that suits them best at the stands of a dozen employers. The companies offered jobs in various fields, such as: salespeople, drivers, bakers, receptionists, graphic designers, mechanical engineers, bankers, translators, nurses, cooks, bartenders, waiters, forklift drivers…

The premises of Dom omladine were not filled with visitors. Participants who offer jobs say that attendance at the fair is lower this year, and that there are almost no young people at all. Most of the visitors are older people with secondary education, as well as refugees who were recommended to the companies at the fair by the United Nations organization UNHCR Serbia (Representation of the UN Refugee Agency in Serbia).

In previous years, according to Marina Antić, the organizer of the fair, many young people came looking for work, but that has changed because “today they can work online, and the companies are different”.

– This year’s fair is one day and there are ten companies at it, which is not much, but employment fairs are no longer a trend. In previous years, there were up to twenty companies. All the companies that are here are doing everything to attract candidates, but today more and more work is done from home and it is not attractive to work for a company in Serbia. They can earn twice as much money online without leaving their home. People come from the Middle East whom UNHCR recommends to employers, and this is one of the ways to reach candidates – said Antičeva.

It used to be enough for companies to come to the fair and find people for work, but today it is necessary to pay for ads on portals and social networks.

– We had an online campaign and young people who wanted to get a job contacted us through social networks, they did not come to the fair. It’s all a challenge, our employers are big, they’re looking for a large number of people. Companies are trying to find ways to offer additional benefits. Now the criterion for employment is that a person wants to work – the organizer explained.

The “Top Job” fair has been organized since 2010.
