“The appropriate commemoration of that crime, as well as the memory of thousands of those who lost their lives, are in line with the previous efforts of the United Nations to recognize and commemorate other cases of genocide.“, the State Department announced in response to the Voice of America’s question.

The announcement indicated that the International Criminal Court, as well as the International Court of Justice in The Hague, confirmed the fact that genocide was committed in Srebrenica in July 1995.

Also, it was stated that the United States supported previous resolutions confirming genocide in other places in the world – which were confirmed by international courts.

The commemoration of historical truths and the acceptance of facts sets the region on the path of reconciliation. Bearing in mind the new genocide denials heard in the countries of the Western Balkans, the United States believes that it is important to commemorate the genocide in Srebrenica in this way.“, says the State Department’s response.

It is also pointed out that the resolution is not directed against any country, nor does it impose collective responsibility on any specific ethnic group.

Informal consultations on the draft resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide are being held at the UN headquarters in New York.

As announced on the official website of the UN, consultations on the draft called “International Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica 1995” were convened by the permanent missions of Germany and Rwanda, together with the missions of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Jordan , the Netherlands, Liechtenstein, Malaysia, New Zealand, Slovenia, Turkey and the United States, Voice of America reports.

The resolution proposal should be on the agenda at the beginning of May.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, is in New York, where he continues talks with representatives of several countries ahead of the General Assembly’s vote on the resolution on the Srebrenica genocide commemoration day, pointing out, as he said, all the dangers that such a unilateral and forced resolution can bring to the region, the international legal order and the UN itself”.
