When we are hit by severe thunderstorms and storms while driving, safety becomes the primary concern of every driver and passenger in the car.

Many believe that a car is a safe haven during a thunderstorm, but how true is that claim?

Roll cage on wheels?

Most cars provide some level of lightning protection, thanks to a design that acts as a Faraday cage. This construction allows the lightning’s electricity to pass through the exterior of the car and from there safely to the ground, protecting everything inside. It is important to note, however, that this effect only protects vehicles with a metal chassis – convertibles with a canvas roof or vehicles with plastic parts do not offer the same level of protection.

Key tips for driving during thunderstorms

The first and foremost recommendation is to avoid driving during a storm if possible. If you’re already on your way when a thunderstorm starts, follow these steps:

  • Close the windows and sunroof: This is crucial in order to maintain the integrity of the Faraday cage that the car naturally forms.
  • Turn off electronic devices: Although lightning is unlikely to directly strike electronics, it is better to take extra precautions.
  • Avoid touching metal parts: Although electricity usually flows through the exterior of the vehicle, avoiding direct contact with metal is a smart extra precaution.
  • Park in a safe place: If possible, park your car and wait for the storm to pass. Avoid parking under trees or other structures that could attract lightning.

What if you do get struck by lightning?

In the rare event that lightning strikes a vehicle, the most important thing is to stay inside the car until the storm passes. The car is supposed to divert the electricity, but getting out of the vehicle before the storm passes can increase the risk of electrocution.

While cars generally provide good protection during thunderstorms, it is crucial to follow safety procedures to avoid unintended consequences. A vehicle can be your safe space, but only if it is used properly during storms.
