PHOENIX – Arizona House of Representatives members voted today, in their third attempt in three weeks, on legislation that would repeal a nearly complete ban on abortion dating back to 1864 that was upheld by the state’s Supreme Court earlier this month.

Three House Republicans joined Democrats in endorsing a Civil War-era law that made abortion a felony punishable by two to five years in prison for anyone who performs it or assists a woman in terminating an unwanted pregnancy.

The Senate will now have to read its bill three times in three separate sessions, meaning the bill could not take effect until next month, NBC News reports.

The state Supreme Court earlier this month ruled to uphold the nearly complete 160-year-old ban.

After that ruling, Republicans across the US, including former President Donald Trump, called on lawmakers to repeal the ban, Tanjug reports.

Republicans in Arizona’s House of Representatives, where the party holds a narrow majority, have remained steadfast in not allowing the abortion bill to advance.

However, due to mounting pressure, at least three Republican lawmakers, along with 29 Democrats, voted to repeal the ban.
