The delegation of SUBNOR from the municipality of Kula, consisting of president Žarko Popović, Radoman Cicmil and Milan Anđelić, also laid a wreath at the memorial. Žarko Popović, president of the SUBNOR municipality of Kula, said that young generations must never forget the sacrifice of the fighters who fell for freedom, and that the Srem Front is a very important historical lesson:

“Young generations must never forget and always remember those great sacrifices and fallen fighters.” This commemoration has great significance for me personally, considering that my cousin Milorad Stojanov Popović died near this monument at the age of 22″.

The Srem Front was one of the most difficult and tragic Serbian battlefields, but also of the entire Second World War, and it was of great importance for the collapse of Hitler’s Germany. About 250 thousand participated in the trench battle, from October 1944 to April 12, 1945. soldiers on both sides. More than 13 thousand fighters of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia were killed, mostly young men from Serbia and Montenegro. More than a thousand members of the Red Army and more than 600 Bulgarians lost their lives in the fighting. Breakthrough of the Srem Front, between the Danube and Bosut , began at dawn on April 12, 1945, after a fifteen-minute preparation from the artillery.
