“The Grand Inquisitor”: The clash of ideals and the challenges of freedom

--

This duodrama is based on the narratives from the novel “The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and explores deep moral, philosophical and spiritual dilemmas.

The play is the master’s work of Avram Cvetković, an acting student at the Faculty of Arts in Kosovska Mitrovica, who portrays the character of Ivan, while Luka Potparić, also an acting student, portrays the character of Aljoša Karamazov.

After nine years of being alone and not communicating, and two months of living together, two brothers by birth for the first time really talk honestly and get to know each other. The older brother Ivan is torn by the question between theodicy and theism, and one of the key themes of “The Grand Inquisitor” is the conflict between free will and authority.

Actor Avram Cvetković says that the play has only been alive for a year, but that during that time it has been awarded as many as five times. He says that playing the play is significant, because it raises theological questions, after which the audience is not at all indifferent.

“Performing this play is significant because it asks the old primal questions, who we are, what we are, where we are in the relationship between God and man, is God so good, and if he is good, why does he allow so much evil in the world.” The audience is always rocked after this show and so far the reactions have always been good. I hope we will have the opportunity to play it here again. This city does not have a theater and people are hungry for culture and art, and then every show that comes to this city makes me happy, and when anyone else plays in this city, not only when I play,” says Cvetković.

The play is directed by prof. Dr. Borjanka Ljumović.

The play won five awards, two at the International Festival of Academic Plays “Čkaljina Dani” held in Kruševac and three at the “Art Trema” festival in Ruma. Cvetković was twice awarded for the best male role and the audience award, while Potparić was awarded for the best secondary and episodic role.

The organizer of the play is the Student Center Prishtina – Kosovska Mitrovica.
