Returning her daughter from school, Maja Stojaković from Sremski Karlovac, found the child’s wallet, and there was quite a lot of money in it. By means of a health card she determined that it was a fifteen-year-old boy, and then, thinking that the child might be in urgent need, he immediately goes in search of him. In her desire to return the lost money to him, Maja persevered, so she met Mateja (15) while he was staying in a hotel on an excursion, 15 kilometers away from her home.

The persistence of a Maya who found near her house wallet the story of the boy from Leskovac is widely retold these days. This is not an ordinary story in which an honest finder takes the lost thing to the police and returns to his home, but the story of a mother who wanted the lost money to reach her son’s age boy as soon as possible so that his excursion would not be in a bad mood due to misfortune events.

She didn’t want to give up the search

She told how she and her husband tried to find the boy and how they met him.

When my daughter and I went home from school near our house, we found a wallet. I took it and saw on the health certificate that it was a boy born in 2009, and then I realized that the child was my son’s age. I took my wallet, came home and posted it on the page “Sremski Karlovci” where people usually post when something is lost and found. However, no one answered. Along with the health card was a membership card for the gym. Since no one answered on that page, my husband and I looked for another way to get the wallet back. I called the gym and got the owner. I asked him, if that boy visits the gym, to let me know because I want to pay him back. He said that he would see and that he might have some information, so he would contact me. I then went to the infirmary to have them read my address using the health card, but I passed there without success. Then I thought that maybe he doesn’t live in Karlovci, but that he came to visit someone or on an excursion – since Maja had no success in finding the owner on her own, she decided to go to the police and take the wallet there.

A mysterious call changed everything

After she made her statement, Maja’s phone rang, telling her that the call was from Slovenia.

– It was already 6:30 p.m., and we were unsuccessfully trying to return that wallet, and the only thing left for me was to go to the police. I gave a statement there and told when I found the wallet, where and how much money was there. In the meantime, while I was waiting for them to type it, for me to sign those papers and for the procedure to be completed, someone from Slovenia called me. I’m wondering who it could be now and I’m answering. Then I hear a man’s voice asking me if I am Maja, and he tells me that he is Mateja’s father and that the owner of the gym gave him my contact. I was really happy and I immediately told the clerk that I had heard from the boy’s father, and she replied, “Here I am talking to his mother.” – Maya recounts.

There she finds out that the boy is from Leskovac, after which she hears from his mother.

She told me that Mateja was on an excursion and that he was staying in a hotel. She told me that I can leave my wallet at the police or if it’s not a problem, I can take it. I told her that I would take it and that I was also a parent. I thought about the fact that this could have happened to my son and that I didn’t want his excursion to fail. Then I called my husband and told him that we had found the boy and where he was. The hotel where he stayed is 15 kilometers away from us. He was overjoyed, hugged me, kissed me and said, “You are a miracle”. When he heard that his money was there, he was in disbelief – says Maya.

She points out that as a parent she knows how much every dinar means, especially in situations where a child needs to be sent on an excursionand on that occasion buy him something new, and then give it for pocket money, and that’s why she wanted to take the money to the boy as soon as possible.

“I didn’t do anything out of the ordinary, I think that’s how everyone should act”Maja pointed out at the end.
