In schools, they were surprised by the unexpectedly poor results shown by the final grade students

IF it is to be judged by the results achieved by the eighth graders in the junior high school exam, they will have to warm up their seats well in the next month and a half, as they have until the “real” final exam, in order to gain enough points to enroll in the desired school.

Namely, the directors of the schools we spoke with say that the high school graduates performed unexpectedly poorly on the Serbian language and mathematics tests and that their achievements are lower than last year. That’s how some children won – one point each on the test in mathematics.

Also, they did not make a name for themselves in the third test out of five optional subjects, and they performed the worst in chemistry.

If we also take into account the fact that this year the score threshold for enrollment in high schools and secondary vocational schools will be increased because the number of students per class will be reduced (instead of 30 there will be 28), graduates will have to be much more serious about preparing their final exams and show incomparably better knowledge if they want to enroll in a more prestigious gymnasium or vocational school.

The directors of educational institutions believe that one of the reasons for the poor result is that the eighth graders do not approach the rehearsal of the final exam seriously and responsibly, because nothing depends on it, unlike the testing in June, which is crucial for enrollment.

Marija Latinović, the director of the “Bora Stanković” elementary school, says that it is more about negligence than ignorance, who confirms that the high school graduates in this school also performed the trial test worse than expected.

The results show that eighth grade students in “Bora” scored an average of 9.05 points out of a possible 20 points in mathematics, and 10.55 points in the Serbian language. When it comes to the third optional subject, in this school they did the best in the physics test, with an average of 15.8 points, followed by the biology test with an average of 13.75 points, followed by geography with an average of 13.27, and history with 12.50 points, and the worst average result was achieved in chemistry, where students scored 11.3 points.

To private schools without points

MARIJA Latinović, principal of the “Bora Stanković” elementary school, notes that a certain number of children are enrolled in private schools where the points from the junior high school graduation are not counted. Thus, the number of points on the final exam is not important to the students who enroll in those schools, they do not even try to do well on the tests, and that also lowers the average. For these students, the final test serves only as a certification document, i.e. proof that they have completed elementary school.

– Pupils have the opportunity to prepare for the final exam at school, because teachers from all subjects that are taken at the junior high school graduation give preparatory classes so that they have the opportunity to renew the material and gain knowledge – points out Marija Latinović.

Even Milan Krstić, the director of the “Pavle Savić” elementary school, is not satisfied with the results shown in the rehearsal of the final exam, who tells us that the graduates did the worst in mathematics with an average of 8.66 points out of a possible 20. The achievement in the Serbian language is slightly better, so on average they won 10.25 points, and when it comes to the third optional subject, they achieved the best result in physics with an average of 13.89 points, followed by geography where they won 12.98, followed by biology with 12.66, and history with 12. 29 points, while in this school they did the worst in the chemistry test with an average score of 11.08 points.

Director Milan Krstić emphasizes that the school has done a detailed analysis of the trial test, and the teachers of all seven subjects that are being taken will go over the material that was on the tests as part of regular classes. Krstić emphasizes that there were also questions from the material that were not covered, which should not happen, because the children do not know this and the result is weaker.

In “Skadarlija” elementary school, the results of the test in mathematics and Serbian do not deviate much from the previous results, but, as the principal Mirjana Sloboda tells us, the eighth graders did unexpectedly poorly on the history test here. This director also believes that the children did not have adequate access to the junior high school graduation rehearsal, they know that nothing depends on it, so they did not try very hard.

By the way, in the survey we conducted among young high school graduates on the mathematics test, geometry was the most difficult for them, and many did not even try to do the tasks that required them to calculate the area of a complex figure. The teachers say that the children did very poorly in the last three tasks, which are the most difficult, and emphasize that more work must be done with them in the areas in which they failed.

From the Serbian language, it was usually the most difficult for them to read and understand the assigned texts, some of them did not bother to read them because they were “too long and took a lot of time”, they were also troubled by the cases, and the test also showed that most students did not read the assigned reading.

By the way, the junior high school graduates go on vacation on May 31, the junior high school graduation awaits them on June 17, 18 and 19, and the teachers say that there is still time to prepare for the final exam.

As for the enrollment calendar, the preliminary results will be published on June 21. The next five days are reserved for student complaints and responses to complaints, while the final results of the final exam will be announced on June 24.

Filling out the wish list is reserved for June 25 and 26. The lists can be filled out electronically on the “My High School” portal or at the school. The publication of the final distribution results by schools and educational profiles will be on the 1st.
