How will the waste water from New Belgrade reach Veliki Selo?

--

The Belgrade Secretariat for Urban Planning and Construction Affairs published the Urban Project for the construction of the first section of the “Interceptor”, i.e. a huge system of sewer collectors which, when completed, will stretch for about 18 kilometers, from New Belgrade to the future wastewater treatment plant in Big village.

The construction of Section 1, which is the subject of a project whose public presentation will last from May 7 to 15, includes, among other things, the construction of a “tube gallery” under the Sava River, from Novo Beograd to the coast below Kalemegdan.

The route of wastewater from the New Belgrade side would begin at the newly designed sewage pumping station (KCS) “Ušće Nova” which, as stated by the authors of the project from the Urban Planning Institute of Belgrade, is intended for pumping wastewater from the area of New Belgrade and Zemun into the system below the Sava (Deonica 1), and then along Vojvoda Bojović Boulevard (Section 2) towards the other sections of the Interceptor and the wastewater treatment plant in Veliko Selo.

The boundary of this urban project partially overlaps with the Detailed Regulation Plan for the multifunctional sports and cultural content in the area of Friendship Park – Usce, as well as with the Detailed Regulation Plan for the Line Park – Belgrade.

The surface area of the Interceptor construction site – Section 1 includes about 1.03 hectares, and the main facilities on the section itself are the “Ušće Nova” KCS, the tunnel section under the Sava River and the exit building and control block on Vojvoda Bojović Boulevard.

“The pipe gallery is a tunnel structure under the Sava river bed, which serves to accommodate and protect two parallel lines of pressure pipelines that carry waste water from the Ušće Nova sewage treatment plant to the right bank of the Sava. The total length of the pipe gallery is about 414 meters”, stated the authors of the urban project.

Let us recall that in January 2020, the Government of Serbia, in the presence of the then mayor and city manager of Belgrade, signed a contract with the Chinese company China Machinery Engineering Corporation on the first phase of the works, worth 271 million euros, and then it was said that in the second phase it would be necessary between 400 and 500 million euros for the construction of the first waste water treatment plant in Veliki Selo, and then another 100 million euros for four more plants for the same purpose.

Apart from the plans for the future development of New Belgrade’s Friendship Park and Line Park, the construction of Section 1 and KCS Ušće Nova is also indirectly related to the plans of investors in the future complex on the premises of the “Yugoslavia” hotel.

The company Millennium Team intends to build, in addition to the new hotel, two residential towers of 155 meters each at the place where “Yugoslavia” is located today.so the authors of the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment (SIA) of that project, the firm ECologica URBO from Kragujevac and Bureau Cube Partners from Belgrade, looked at the quality and capacities of the existing sewage network.

“The main recipient for used water from the area in question, according to the current situation, is KCS Ušće, which pushes used water into the Danube. The immediate recipient of the used water for the newly planned facilities (on the premises of the “Yugoslavia” hotel) will be the fecal collector on Nikola Tesla Boulevard, after it has been brought to its intended purpose,” says the SPU, explaining how the construction of Ušća-Nova will affect the capacity of the collector on which investors count.

“The fecal collector (in Nikola Tesla Blvd.) was built 30 years ago and will be put into operation, after additional capacity has been provided, with the construction of the planned KCS Ušće – Nova. According to the current situation, that collector at Hotel ‘Yugoslavia’ is not in operation, since the capacity of the existing KCS Ušće is insufficient to accept additional amounts of used water”, concluded the authors of SPU ECologica URBO and Bureau Cube Partners.
