The President of the City Municipality of New Belgrade, Bojan Bovan, and the Mayor of the Chinese sister city of Zhenjiang, Xu Shuhai, today laid wreaths at the memorial to the Chinese citizens who died in the bombing of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in New Belgrade during the NATO aggression in 1999.
“The new Belgrade nurtures a culture of memory, and in that historical memory, that callous act towards the Chinese people, which truly shook Serbia, will forever remain inscribed. Those victims were experienced by the Serbian people as their own,” said President Bovan during a conversation with a Chinese friend, according to a statement from the New Belgrade Government.
In the NATO bombing of the then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, on May 7, 1999, three Chinese citizens were killed, and two victims, journalists from the newspaper “Guangming Zhibao”, spouses Xu Singhu and Zhu Ying, are natives of Zhenjiang.
Last year, New Belgrade signed an agreement with Dženjian on cooperation between the two local administrations in the fields of economy, culture, tourism, education, science and sports.
Before the visit to the place where Chinese citizens were killed, the exhibition “Remembrance of martyred Chinese journalists” by Renko R. Spalevic, the president of the Association of NOR Fighters in New Belgrade, which celebrates this date every May 7 as a day that has become a symbol of friendship and brotherhood of the Chinese and Serbian people.
Bovan and the Chinese delegation also visited the Chinese Cultural Center, which was built on the site of the bombed embassy in Ulica Trešnjino cveta, announced the Municipality of Novi Belgrade.
