The “Start-change” movement announced today in Sremska Mitrovica that it will run independently in the upcoming local elections in this city and that its candidate for mayor will be Žarko Babić, coordinator of the “Start-change Young Mitrovica” team.
“Two days ago, we were all paralyzed and it seemed that a new wave of apathy would overwhelm Serbia.” What we see now are smiles on faces, it started with smiles in Belgrade, yesterday we saw smiles in Novi Sad, now we see smiles in Sremska Mitrovica. I invite you all to continue spreading smiles. Each citizen in each city decides whether and when that smile will be removed from his face,” said Savo Manojlović, presenting the candidate of the “Go-change” movement for mayor of Sremska Mitrovica.
“I am Žarko Babić, and I am from Sremska Mitrovica. The wave of changes started from Belgrade, via Novi Sad and has now reached Sremska Mtrovica,” said Babić.
“Our team has shown through its actions so far that together with our fellow citizens we have managed to contribute to significant changes and we will continue in that direction.” We will continue to advocate for ecology, for a cleaner and more beautiful Mitrovica, for social equality as well as for youth policy,” said Babić.
Who is Žarko Babić, candidate for mayor of Sremska Mitrovica?
Žarko Babić is a graduate in agricultural engineering, born in 1992 in Sremska Mitrovica and is the father of one child. He has been known to the Mitrovica public for many years as a civic activist who, through numerous initiatives, tried to influence the local self-government in order to solve specific problems of the citizens of Sremska Mitrovica.
One of the last actions he carried out with his team “Move-change Young Mitrovica” is a people’s initiative to provide free textbooks to all primary school children in the territory of Sremska Mitrovica.
He became better known to the wider public after he alerted the public in January of this year and organized a protest in front of the City Assembly in Sremska Mitrovica, following the testimony of the mother Marica Mihajlović, who accused the doctor from the General Hospital in Sremska Mitrovica of the death of her newborn due to, as she said, negligence and violent treatment during childbirth. After this, together with Marina Pavlić, he was one of the main initiators of the request to provide birth attendants in hospitals throughout Serbia.
