On April 27, at 5:48 p.m., the Ukrainian newspaper RBK Ukraine reported, citing the Operational Command South, that a light motor plane of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down two Russian reconnaissance drones.

According to Ukrainian sources, the event unfolded as follows: when Russian drones were spotted in the sky above Odessa, a two-seater JaK-52M sports training plane flew to meet them.

In the seat of the passenger/instructor sat a soldier armed with a small-arms weapon. Thanks to skillful piloting and precise bursts of automatic fire, The Ukrainians even shot down two Russian Orlan-10 drones.

From the Russian sidesome sources, the truth is somewhat unclear, they showed the aerial duel diametrically differently. To themthe Ukrainians actually sent one Yakovljev JaK-52 painted in typical military camouflage to Orlan-10.

The co-pilot from the back seat of the UAV started to act from the automatic. However, Ukrainian soldiers from the ground also opened fire on the Russian reconnaissance planes.

And – the Russian Orlani-10 calmly moved away from the scene, and the Ukrainians “successfully” shot down their own Ukrjet UJ-22 Airborne drone! At the same time, no one explains where the UJ-22 came from.

Association with the Great War

The whole story is interesting as it is reminiscent of aerial duels from the first years of the First World War; at that time, the machines were not yet equipped with synchronized machine guns, so the opponent’s guns were shot with pistols or even classic carbines.

In addition, the aircraft over Odessa resembled those from the past.

Namely, the training JaK-52 is powered by a single-blade piston four-stroke gasoline engine, most often the M14P. JaK is 7,745m long, has a wingspan of 9.3m and will reach a maximum speed of 270 km/h.

The Russian Orlan-10 propeller is powered by a two-stroke gasoline engine. It is 1.8m long, has a wingspan of 3.1m and reaches a maximum speed of 100-150km/h.

Finally, and the propeller of the Ukrainian UAV UJ-22 Airborne is powered by a gasoline two-stroke engine; the length of the drone is 3.3 m, the wingspan is 4.6 m, and the maximum speed is up to 160 km/h.

The advantage of the UJ-22 is the landing gear, so that a runway with a maximum length of 50 meters is required for take-off. In contrast, the Russian Orlan-10 catapults and uses a parachute to land at the starting point.

It is this detail that casts doubt on the Russian version of the aerial duel. Namely, the video shows a piston plane circling around the aircraft which is slowly falling under the red dome of the parachute.

These are the advantages and disadvantages of modern means of information: you can follow events practically in real time. On the other hand, you may or may not believe in the authenticity of the video.
