In 2021, Serbia was the fourth poorest country in Europe in terms of gross domestic product per inhabitant and standardized individual consumption per inhabitant, according to data from the European Statistical Office – Eurostat.

When it comes to gross domestic product per inhabitant, last year Serbia was 55 percent below the average in the European Union, and it stands somewhat better with individual consumption per inhabitant, where differences in prices in individual countries are also taken into account, where it is 47 percent below the EU average.

According to data published by Eurostat, last year North Macedonia, Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina were poorer than Serbia.

In 2021, Luxembourg and Ireland had the highest gross domestic product per capita – 168 and 119 percent, respectively, above the European Union average.

They are followed by Denmark with a 33 percent higher GDP per inhabitant than the EU average, the Netherlands with 30 percent, and Austria and Sweden with 23 percent.

The worst among the EU members is Bulgaria, with a GDP per inhabitant that is 43 percent lower than the average, and the penultimate is Greece, where it is 36 percent lower than the Union average.

When it comes to individual consumption per inhabitant expressed in terms of purchasing power parity, Luxembourg is in first place, which is 44 percent above the EU average. It is followed by Germany with 20 percent above the average, Denmark with 19, Austria with 17 and Belgium with 16 percent above the average.

At the bottom of the list is Bulgaria, with per capita consumption that is 35 percent lower than the average of the European Union, followed by Hungary and Slovakia, which are 30 percent below the average.
