After last week’s vote in the House of Representativesthe US Senate passed by 78 votes to 18 a set of foreign aid bills for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as well as a National Security Package that includes a ban on Tik-Tok.

The passed legislation is now on its way to the White House, and President Joe Biden is expected to ratify it tomorrow.

Tik-Tok has more than 170 million users in the US, and according to the new law, the Chinese company “Bytedance” will have to sell its share in the social network.

If it doesn’t, Tik-Tok will be denied access from all online app stores, and users across the US will be unable to access the social network.

Bytedance will have 270 days, or nine months, to sell its share.

President Joe Biden will be able to extend the deadline by another three months if more time is needed for the sale, which means that the Tik-Tok ban could come within a year at the latest.

The measure against Tik-Tok was supported by an overwhelming majority of senators from both parties, who claim that the Chinese authorities could, in accordance with domestic laws, force “ByteDance” to hand over all the data it has on 170 million users in the US.

Tik-Tok has repeatedly repeated that it has not and would not hand over the data of users from abroad to the Chinese authorities.
