Tokyo intends to communicate directly with the Houthis regarding the hijacked ship

Japan says it will “approach directly” Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels after seizing a ship partly owned by an Israeli businessman and operated by a Japanese firm with about 25 crew members.

Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa says Tokyo is communicating with Israel, and is appealing to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran and other interested countries to strongly influence the Houthis to release the ship and crew members early.

“Our government will continue to take the necessary measures in cooperation with the countries concerned, taking into account the situation,” Kamikawa added.

Houthi army spokesman Yahya Sari said the rebels seized an “Israeli ship” on Sunday.

The Bahamian-flagged vessel is registered to a British company, which is partly owned by Israeli tycoon Abraham Ungar.

The ship was leased to a Japanese company at the time of the hijacking.
