As much as every parent is aware that sometimes a child has to get sick, the fact is that it is not easy for anyone. Of course, you can’t avoid every cold and virus, but what you can do is avoid some mistakes that moms and dads often make when their little ones are sick.

1. You don’t have to give him vitamin C

When a child has a cold, almost the first thing parents do is to “peck” him with vitamin C, to help him get better faster. However, Dr. Molly Grow points out that it is certainly good to give your little one healthy, nutrient-rich foods to help them get better sooner, but that there is no scientific evidence that high doses of vitamin C help recovery more than normal doses of this vitamin.

2. Don’t give him too much sugar

When a child has symptoms of diarrhea, sweets and sugary drinks can make things worse. Dr. Grow advises that you give the little ones diluted fruit juices instead, and you can freeze them and make ice creams out of them – this will ease the pain a little for the little ones if they have a sore throat.

3. Don’t wake him up for medication

In addition to rest and hydration, children sometimes need some medication to help them get better faster. There are instructions for each type of medicine for how many hours it should be taken and in what dose, and the expert’s advice is that you should never be too young to drink a dose of medicine.

“Let your child sleep because it’s an important part of the healing process. A big part of recovery depends on rest and sleep. Let the body do what it needs naturally when it comes to sleep,” advises Dr. Grow.

4. Do not lock the child in the house

It is a common belief that it is not good for a child to go outside when they are sick. However, looking at the phone or TV all day is bad for the eyes and can also lead to headaches. Dr. Grow therefore advises to let the little one go out for some fresh air, if he feels well enough for it.

“Being in nature regulates our systems. Just walking or doing something that doesn’t strain us in nature has a therapeutic effect,” she says.

5. Do not rush to the doctor

If a child has a fever, but is able to eat, drink fluids and doesn’t show any changes in mental status, you can monitor his condition at home for a few days, says Dr. Grow. She advises that you give your child fever-reducing medicines intended for children, and points out that if the symptoms change or the temperature lasts longer than five days, then you should definitely go to the doctor.

6. Do not take the child away from you

Physical contact with a parent can have a therapeutic effect on the child and thus help him to heal faster. If you are worried about your child passing on an infection to you, consider wearing a protective mask to avoid getting infected. Also, wash your hands often and avoid sharing food or cutlery.
