The captain of the Croatian national team, and the record holder for the number of appearances for the “Vatrene”, is from a mixed marriage. Many people do not know the fact that Luka Modrić is Croatian on his father’s side – while his mother is Serbian.

In addition, it should be noted that members of his family on his mother’s side died in the Second World War, as well as that one of the commanders of the army of the Republic of Serbian Krajina was his close relative. It is a part of the family history that Luka Modrić does not mention so often in interviews, as reported by “Mondo”.

Luka’s mother Radojka is a Serb from the village of Kruševo near Obrovac. This settlement, predominantly inhabited by Croats, currently has about 1,100 people, and the Dopuđi have been the only Serbian family in it since ancient times. According to the 1991 census, 107 Serbs lived in the town.

On the other side of the lineage, Modrić is originally from the village of Zaton Obrovacki, and Luka lived in the birthplace of his father Stipet until he was six years old. Due to the war in what is now Croatia, the family moved to Zadar in 1991, where Luka grew up and took his first football steps.
