13 years ago, Serbia won the “salatara” with a victory against France in Belgrade, and Tipsarević and Troicki, along with Novak Đoković and Nenad Zimonjić, were members of the team.
A new campaign for the trophy is the sheep of the week, where the final tournament is held in Malaga, and Serbia’s rival in the quarter-finals, on Thursday, will be Great Britain.
– First of all, I would like to thank the coach Viktor Troicki, and then the entire team, for the invitation to be here with them in Malaga, as part of the coaching staff. Throughout my career, the Davis Cup was a special competition for me and I always played better for Serbia. This is partly for patriotic reasons, and a much stronger reason is that the guys from the national team are my best friends. That is why I am very glad that I was invited, and I hope that I will be able to help – said Tipsarevic.
When asked if he could draw a parallel between 2010 and 2023, Tipsarevic said that there is no big difference.
– There is no excessive difference. I can’t remember exactly, but neither Viktor nor I were Top 10 players, we were 20th or 30th on the list. Of course, Novak was the team leader then and now. It’s unbelievable, but even now, so many years later, he’s the first again. The boys are physically ready, mentally they know what is expected of them. We are going to win, we are going to conquer. And the way Novak plays, every other outcome except winning the trophy was not catastrophic, but – a failure. The only thing that can be seen is that everyone is under the pressure of the end of the season, we are deep into November.
Tipsarevic adds that the British will be a strong rival, despite the fact that they are not in the strongest squad.
– It was talked about for a long time who will play for them. Evans canceled due to injury, Andy Murray was also injured, and Nori announced the possibility of not playing. Nevertheless, a very difficult opponent, with a good team and a strong double, and luck looked at us a little because of the cancellation of Evans and Murray. But, whoever they send to the field, it will be a strong opponent – Tipsarević concluded.
