The Premier League was rocked by a major scandal after it was announced that two Premier League footballers were arrested after rape was reported to the police. Two unnamed footballers are from the same club and were arrested this weekend, English “The Sun” reports.
One player, aged 19, reportedly spoke to police on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting rape before being formally arrested. After spending the night in a cell, he was questioned under the presumption of guilt by detectives. Another player, also 19, was arrested the next day and later questioned by police on suspicion of rape.
According to the newspaper, both players have reportedly been released on bail pending further investigations.
A police spokesman told The Sun:
– Police officers arrested two men after a report of rape. A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting rape. Another 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape. Both were later released on bail – he said.
The source also said that officers came to the stadium and spoke to one of the players “in a private room inside the stadium”. They added that he left the club with “another person” and was formally arrested later that night.
The club’s spokesperson told the aforementioned newspaper.
– Since the matter is now in the hands of the police, the Football Club will not make further comments at this time – said the spokesperson.
