American journalist and presenter Nick Wright considers Nikola Jokic the best player in the NBA, and everything looked different just a few seasons ago.
For some time now, Wright has been changing the story of Jokic, who was the best in the previous three years and who already has two MVP awards and one NBA title.
The Denver Nuggets are currently up 2-0 in the series against the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs and the series is moving to Los Angeles. At the end of the race for the MVP, where Luka Doncic, Shay Giljes-Aleksander and Nikola Jokic were the other finalists, Wright ranked the first two two rows below the Serbian player.
“You might say there are two more rows to the top, who else is left?” Please reveal row number two, and with all due respect to the person at the top, that row is empty. Because, okay, number one is the biggest predator in the league at the moment, 28-year-old (29-year-old prim. out) Nikola Jokic. Chris, now I’m going to give you a list of names: LeBron, Kareem, Michael, Magic, Russell, Wilt, Duncan, Kobe, Bird, that’s nine names. If they win the title, those are the only nine names in NBA history that you can say are unequivocally better than him. Then he gets in a room with Shaquille O’Neal, Steph Curry, Jerry West, Hakeem Olajuwon, he’s in the room with them and people can argue about it. He’s already surpassed Moses, Oscar, he’s already surpassed Giannis and Durant if you ask me,” Wright said on “First Things First.”
Everything changed after Jokic won the trophy with Denver, with which he grew together for the past nine years. The Nuggets came from rebuilding through the draft to the title, the first in almost half a century in elite basketball.
Prior to that title, Wright was one of Jokic’s fiercest critics, to the point where he even talked about how promoting Jokic was not good for the show’s TV ratings.
“Someone tells me I’m doing this for TV ratings.” Well, let me let you in on a little TV secret: talking about Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets is not good for ratings, folks! That’s not how you bring in the widest audience. You’re not going to get TV viewers talking about ‘The Joker’ and the Nuggets!” Wright said a few years ago.
