What is Bell’s palsy?
The exact cause of paralysis of the facial nerve is not known. Some link the development to a viral infection. It is known for sure to be caused by exposing that side of the face to colder conditions (driving with the window open). Sometimes, before the onset, there may be pain behind the ear on that side. It is usually not associated with other neurological symptoms. The facial nerve is responsible for the innervation of the facial muscles that are responsible for facial expressions, movement of the eyelids, forehead and neck muscles.
Symptoms arise as a consequence of the impossibility of all functions related to the facial nerve. Blinking, closing the eyes, laughing, salivation and tears and facial expressions (furrowing of the forehead) are disabled. The skin of the face and half of the mouth are relaxed and the patient cannot control the movements of the muscles on that side of the face. The muscle that lifts the upper eyelid is not innervated by the facialis, so the eye can open normally, but it is not possible to close the eyelids. This is precisely why the cornea dries out.
