Crvena zvezda was forced to make changes in October of last year, due to poor results at the beginning of the season and rapid decline.

Thus, she terminated the contract with Dusko Ivanovic and brought in an experienced coach, Janis Sferopoulos.

The Greek signed a two-year contract with the red and whites.

Whether Sferopoulos is good enough and whether he should stay at Red Star next season is a subject that is being speculated about more and more as the current season draws to a close.

We will start in order and make a short analysis.

Yanis Sferopoulos started his coaching career in a local club as a youth coach back in 1986, after which he took over the first team in 1994.

The road took him to his native Thessaloniki, where he was an assistant coach of PAOK for eight years, and his quality was recognized by the great rival Olympiakos, on whose bench, also as an assistant, he sat for another three seasons.

Then it was time for the first real job, the position of the first coach, and Colossus from Rhodes was interested in his services, on whose bench he spent three years.

He evidently left a quality impression there, as Jonas Kazlauskas invited him to be his assistant at CSKA Moscow in 2011, which was his return to the Euroleague.

The crowning glory of his career, a year later, came in the form of an invitation from the Houston Rockets, where he was their assistant coach in 2012, after which he definitively began his professional career as the first coach in the Panionios team.

His good releases recommended him for a big step forward, as in 2014 Olympiakos decided to hire him as their first coach, six years after he left Piraeus as an assistant.

In four years in red and white colors, he won two titles of the champion of Greece, after which in 2018 he started his journey to Tel Aviv, in the ranks of Maccabi, and on two occasions he also played in the final of the Euroleague.

He also spent three seasons in Israel, during which time he won three Israeli championship titles, one cup, two league cups, while he was named coach of the year twice in Israel.

After the “Pride of Israel” he moved to Red Star, where he is still a coach to this day.

When we look at his coaching career, it is clear that he does not lack quality and experience.

What we have to take into account when it comes to his coaching involvement in Zvezda is the fact that Sferopoulos did not build the team, but that Ivanovic did it.

This is a big thing, which we must not ignore, because it is not the same to lead a team that you personally built and a team that, as the jargon says, was “rolled” into you.

The impression is that the Greek got the most out of the player, although it may not look like that.

Red Star finished the Euroleague 16th in the table, which is a devastating result.

On the other hand, in the regular part of the ABA League, it was the first, which allowed it to play the playoffs of the Adriatic League at home.

The red and whites will try to win the regional league and how much will mitigate the bad results in the Euroleague.

Sferopoulos has so far won the Radivoj Korac Cup with Zvezda when he defeated Partizan in the final.

What we can conclude is that the Greek is someone who has experience and there is no doubt that he would have had better results with the red and whites if he had made the team.

The majority of “Delia” is in favor of Sferopoulos being on the Red Star bench next season as well.

Portal Espresso has concluded from everything seen so far that the Greek would be the best possible solution for the next season and that he should remain on the Red Star bench!

If, however, Sferopoulos does not stay next season, the most realistic option for the red and whites would be Dejan Radonjić, who was on the bench for the red and whites on several occasions.
