Former coach of Porto, Chelsea and Zenit, Andre Villas Boas (46), is the new president of Porto! In his headquarters, the victory was declared after more than 26 thousand members of the club went to the polls.

In Porto, he will be the successor of Jorge Núnha Pinto Da Costa, who has been the president since 1982. “We want to modernize the club – not because I am not grateful to Mr. Pinto da Costa, but because Porto is in a different phase of its existence and needs a change. I prepared myself to be the leader of the transformation of the club“, said the former coach of “Zmajeva”, who now has a big job ahead of him.

Under the leadership of former president Pinto da Costa, Porto won as many as 68 trophies and is therefore the most successful president in the world, and also the longest-serving in world football. Under his command, Porto played their first European final in 1984 and lost in Basel to Juventus 1:2 in the match for the Cup Winners’ Cup trophy. However, as early as 1987, Porto reached the final of the Champions Cup, losing to Bayern 0:1 at halftime, and then won the European champion’s trophy.

In the following years, Porto established dominance in the Portuguese championship, Bobby Robson sat on the bench and began a series of five consecutive titles won from 1995 to 1999, ending with the title of Fernando Santos. Not much has passed since then, in 2002 Jose Mourinho sat on the bench, then a new coaching sensation under whose leadership the UEFA Cup was won, and then another title of European champion in 2004.

In the phase after the departure of “Special” to Chelsea, Porto looked for a way to success and found it in 2011, when under the leadership of the now new president, they won the Portuguese championship, the Super Cup, the Europa League and the Portuguese Cup. However, a new dominance was not established, but from 2013 to 2017, the driest period of Pinto da Costa’s tenure was created – without a single trophy. In the previous seven years, under the leadership of Serge Konsais, Porto won three more titles and three Cups, along with appearances in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. On that basis, the new president will start new processes at the “Dragao” stadium, where the title will not come this spring. Leaders Sporting currently have a huge advantage over Porto, who are leading the race with Braga for third place.

Andre Villas-Boas has been without a club since 2021, when he left Olympique Marseille. Previously, he was an assistant coach to Jose Mourinho in Porto, Chelsea and Inter, he started his independent career in Akademika in 2009, and then he himself followed Jose’s path. He independently managed Porto, Chelsea, Tottenham, Zenit for two years (2014-16), and then spent a season in China, in Shanghai Port, before moving to France, in his last team for now.

He was born in Porto, where he will soon take up a completely new position, after winning three titles and two double crowns with that team as an assistant, the Champions League, the Uefa Cup, and then he was the national champion and winner of the “double crown” and as the head of the professional staff. Also, with Porto he has a Euro-trophy, the Europa League, won in 2011. A few years later, he was the champion and winner of the Russian Cup, as well as the Super Cup of that country.
