The match between Canada and Croatia will be more than a game for Milan Borjan.

The goalkeeper of the Canadian national team is a native of Knin, where he was exiled as a boy with his relatives and the rest of the Serbian population.

Due to the war on the territory of the former Yugoslavia and the shameful Croatian Storm, Borjan had to leave the then Serbian Krajina.

Today, 27 years later, the captain of Crvena zvezda and a great Serb has the opportunity to take revenge on the Croats – on the sports field, as the goalkeeper of Canada.

Borjan does not like the word “revanchism”, nor does he like to remember the days of his exile, when he came to Canada as a boy, and here is what he wrote two years ago in commemoration of the Storm:

“Good afternoon everyone, I am Milan Borjan, one of the boys who 25 years ago was in an endless column of refugees during the ‘Storm’. I remember that column where mothers cried, grandmothers wailed desperately for the sons, husbands, and fathers left behind. We children we were not aware of what was happening then, we only saw that our houses were burning, the playgrounds where we had played without care until yesterday, we were scared, thirsty and hungry… Today, all of us who survived that terrible, endless column bear big scars and wounds. Some of us have never recovered. Some of us serve the state of Serbia, contribute to sports, science, politics, medicine, the judiciary…” Milan Borjan wrote on Instagram two years ago.

That’s why the match with Croatia will be more than a game for Milan Borjan.
