PRO-GOVERNMENT demonstrations in Iran today show the power of the Islamic Republic, President Ebrahim Raisi said, after days of unrest over the death of a woman who was detained by morality police.
– The presence of the people at the marches today represents the power and honor of the Islamic Republic – Raisi said on live television after returning from New York where he attended the United Nations General Assembly, reports Reuters.
Demonstrations in several Iranian cities were organized by the core to counter anti-government unrest.
The British agency pointed out that pro-government protesters called for the execution of people protesting against the regime, after a 22-year-old girl died as a result of torture by the so-called morality police.
The death toll in clashes between police and demonstrators at increasingly violent protests across Iran could reach 26, Iranian state television said, and AP reported.
Videos on social media, among other things, show protesters in Tehran burning police cars and clashing with police officers.
