BEFORE THE MATCH

Mexico have qualified for their eighth successive World Cup and are hoping this will finally be the year they get past the last 16, having been knocked out at the same stage of the competition in their last seven appearances.

Just a year after losing to Brazil in 2018, the popular “el tri” made history for his country and won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019, before finishing as runners-up two years before.

They then qualified for the World Cup back in March as second place in the North American qualifiers, behind Canada, on goal difference after eight wins in 14 matches.

Mexico have always fielded talented squads at the World Cup, and veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and attacking trio Raul Jimenez, Jesus Corona and Hirving Lozano will be key ahead of a likely battle with Poland for second place in Group C.

It should also be noted that this national selection managed to get out of the group stage at each of the last seven world championships. In the 2018 edition, they created a sensation and beat the mighty Germany.

On the other hand, Poland’s performances at the World Championships were not so rich. They have not made it past the group stage since 1982 and failed to qualify for the 2010 and 2014 editions of the tournament. In 2018, they lost their first two matches before beating Japan in their final group game.

The team have secured qualification for a second consecutive World Cup and, after crashing out in the group stage in 2018, are hoping to go further and reach the knockout stages for the first time since 1986.

After finishing bottom of their group four years ago, Poland also suffered the same fate at Euro 2020.

The road to Qatar was thorny, and a place was not secured through the qualifications in which England were ahead of this Eastern European country. Lewandowski and company did so with a 2-0 playoff final victory over Sweden in March this year.

The two countries have played three times so far, the last time was in 2017. Both won one game, while one was a draw. Today’s rivals enter the tournament in similar form, having tasted victory in just two of their last five games.

MEXICAN OCTOPUS AGAINST POLISH PREDATOR

What happens when a goalkeeper octopus with unreal reflexes comes face to face with an attacking predator that has been ravaging world football for years? We’ll find out when tough Mexican netminder Guillermo “Memo” Ochoa faces Poland’s Robert Lewandowski in their Group C encounter.

Although both players are already in their mid-thirties, the fate of their teams at this World Cup largely depends on them.

Ochoa’s miraculous saves in the previous two editions, especially his performance against Brazil in 2014, made him a cult hero of the World Cup.

Lewandowski is one of the most skilled scorers in world football today, and in October he won the “Gerda Müller” trophy for the best striker of the year.

The fact that Barcelona’s goalscorer has more than 600 goals for club and country, but has yet to score his debut at the World Cup, sounds completely incredible. The dream of scoring the first goal at the World Cup will turn into a nightmare for the Pole from 17:00, our time, when the brilliant Guillermo Ochoa.
