The police told “News24” that they have opened an investigation into Janeska’s death and that at this stage the law enforcement authorities are not treating her as suspicious.

– The police received a call regarding a person who allegedly killed himself on the Basoni estate. Upon arrival at the address, the police found a woman with a gunshot wound to the head in the bedroom. Beside her was a firearm. Paramedics pronounced the woman dead – said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.

Mia was born in Macedonia, but lived in Tanzania for more than a decade. Reports say she was living in South Africa before her death.

“News24” learned from a source that her boyfriend, Kyle Phillips, said that he was in the house at the time of his girlfriend’s death and that he rushed to the room where she was found.

Phillips’ ex-wife, Tracy, disputed that account of events but could not provide any details about it. She said Phillips was “devastated and shocked by this tragedy.” She said she would “cooperate with the investigation.”

The relative, who asked not to be named, told “News24” that the family was in “absolute shock”.

– Our phones have not stopped ringing, this is all new for us. We are in Europe and our hands are tied because we cannot come to South Africa due to visa issues. She’s lying there in some morgue, and we have no idea what’s really going on – the relative added.

According to her relative, Janeska’s family learned of her death through one of Phillips’ former associates, who called to tell them that her body had been found and that suicide was suspected to be the cause of her death.

– Sometimes she was afraid for her life. Her boyfriend had men working for him and she was afraid of them too. We are heartbroken and seriously don’t know what to do – he said.

The relative added that when Phillips contacted them about Janeska’s death, he seemed “distraught.”

Kyle Phillips is a well-known businessman, one of the directors of the Carnlinix cigarette company.

She was respected in Africa

Sefer Canoski, director of the FON University in North Macedonia, posted on his Facebook profile the news of Maja Janevska’s death, but stated that she lost her life in an accident.

– Yesterday the minister of South Africa called me with shocking news and informed me that on Friday morning Maya lost her life in an accident…. I can’t believe that she is no longer with us, and last week she was in Macedonia to celebrate the fact that helped the country to be recognized by South Africa and to establish diplomatic relations after a long time – he said.

According to him, Janevska worked to establish diplomatic relations between her homeland and African countries.

– She told me that she has created a large network of friends in many countries of the African region and that she is respected as a successful woman. I saw this for myself during my trip to Africa when she organized meetings with several countries and the head of state in Pretoria. She was very respected there.

He said that he learned from her family that her fiance “promised that he would bring the remains by plane and that she would be buried with dignity in her own Ohrid”, “Večer” reports.

According to Janeska’s LinkedIn account, she is the president of business development at Blazer Investments, which is described as a business advisory and brokerage organization.

In her last Instagram post on November 22, Janeska was shown with North Macedonia’s Foreign Minister Bujar Osman. She announced that the engagement was aimed at establishing diplomatic relations between “my country, the Republic of North Macedonia, and my second home, the Republic of South Africa.”

“She was not suicidal”

For Janeska’s close friend, Iva Ristić, the news of her untimely death was “heartbreaking”.

– I spoke with her on Thursday and she was not suicidal. She was not that kind of person – she said.

As she said, she recently returned from a diplomatic trip to Macedonia.

– She was such a beautiful woman, full of life, very talented and ambitious. She was well acquainted with the country’s ministers and chiefs. She loved life, and I don’t understand why someone would hurt her in any way – Ristić said.

Speaking to students just nine days before her death, Janeska described how she moved to Tanzania at the age of 19, where she received an offer to work in a hotel. There she learned Swahili and began a career as a makeup artist and stylist.

She urged her young audience not to give up on their dreams.

– You can have good and bad moments in life, but you are the one who can and should make changes. Desire is one thing, confidence is another. Believe in yourself, because that’s the only way you’ll succeed – she said.
