JUBILEE

The University of Montenegro is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Mathematics professor Žarko Pavićević, who has the title of professor emeritus and who greatly influenced the shaping of that educational institution, talks about what it’s like to be part of a big family, almost since its foundation, in Dnevnik.

Rich experience, scientific-research works, numerous awards, recognitions, generations of successful students and, finally, good mathematicians – all this is just part of the work experience at the University of Montenegro, which is remembered by professor emeritus Žarko Pavićević. The most emotional, he says, is always caused by going back to the very beginning.

“Study time in Belgrade, youth, training time in Moscow and the beginnings at the University of Montenegro, that is 1977 when I became an assistant trainee, my first university title, will remain in my memory for the rest of my life,” Pavićević said.

And in order for the memory to be filled with the most sincere emotions, the students are responsible for that, Pavićević points out. He welcomed and saw off numerous generations, and each of them, he says, is special in its own way.

“I often tell students in lectures that we were happy, we were happy if we had one pair of jeans, one pair of sneakers, one windbreaker, so we were delighted if we could buy a cheap Russian book on mathematics, today’s generation has everything,” said Pavićević.

All of this can be a stumbling block, because of which today’s students do not have enough attention and inspiration, which, says Pavićević, his colleagues had when they chose mathematics as a lifestyle.

“Somehow it seems to me that while we thoroughly studied what we studied, these generations get over it faster, the pace is faster, I have the feeling that they don’t delve too much, they rush to finish their studies as soon as possible, to deal with business”, he pointed out. Pavicevic.

Professor Pavićević says, you should not rush, but slow down and use all the opportunities provided by the University of Montenegro in the right way.

So he has a message for all future mathematicians:

“Mathematics is not a 100-meter sprint, it’s a marathon, and only with persistence, dedication, strength, psychological stability, even including emotions, can one achieve excellent success in mathematics,” concludes Pavićević.
