What do the richest people’s job interviews look like? Judging by the stories very specifically. More precisely, a story recently reached the media about how a woman got a job with the owner of Amazon, Jeff Bezos.
More precisely, 11 years ago Ann Hyatt applied for a job ad at Amazon, the last part of the interview was a conversation with Bezos.
As soon as she entered, Bezos set her a puzzle.
“I want you to estimate the number of glass surfaces in the city of Seattle,” he said.
“I started with how many people live in Seattle. Fortunately, I guessed there were about a million of them. Then I said how each of them has to live somewhere, drive a car, work somewhere, go to school, they all have windows. That’s why I suggested that we count them,” she said.
They started counting. They went through every possible scenario, every possible exception.
“We calculated for a long time. I remember being extremely excited when we got to the final assessment. “When he entered that number, Bezos turned to me and said that it seemed to him that the estimate was correct,” Hayatova said.
Then he asked another question:
“What are your career goals?” he asked.
Ann said that she thinks Amazon is a company where smart and creative people work, and that she just wants to emulate them to begin with. She got the job right away.
She didn’t have a day of experience, and she got a desk just three meters from Bezos and was his junior assistant.
After Amazon, she also worked for Google, and now owns a consulting company that provides business advice to Silicon Valley powerhouses.
