NATO fighter jets have intercepted Russian military aircraft near Estonian airspace for the second time this week, the British Air Force (RAF) announced.

British and German fighters participated in yesterday’s action, which, as part of the operation to jointly protect the airspace of the eastern flank of NATO, intercepted Russian planes not far from Estonian airspace.

Two Typhoon fighter jets intercepted a Russian Tu-134 military transporter, which was followed by two Russian Su-27 Flanker fighters and an AN-2 military transport aircraft, the RAF announced.
This kind of interception is not atypical, but the joint operation to guard the sky is taking place for the first time in cooperation between two NATO allies, Germany and Great Britain.
The RAF described the operation as “a clear signal that Britain, Germany and other NATO members stand by Estonia in these tense moments”.
– We quickly identified the Russian planes and then tracked them as they flew near NATO airspace – said Richard Lisk, one of the RAF commanders.
