Morels are usually considered edible mushrooms, and all tests for pesticides and other toxins on their surfaces were negative, the restaurant claims. However, the investigation found that the people who got sick ate raw mushrooms, while those who ate cooked mushrooms were fine.
Morel toxicity is uncommon, but not impossible. During the past 15 years, about 150 reports of poisoning have been recorded precisely from morels. In April 2023, Donna and her husband John went to Dave’s Sushi in downtown Bozeman for lunch, where Donna ordered a specialty roll.
A family lunch turns into a nightmare when Donna is taken by ambulance to the hospital, where she promptly goes into cardiac arrest. From April 17 to 29, Donna was in the intensive care unit, connected to a ventilator because she could not breathe on her own. The toxins in the mushrooms caused her liver and kidneys to fail. Eating food containing hydrazine can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and organ damage.
“Her whole body was swollen due to the accumulation of water, and she simply decided to surrender. Her last words still haunt me,” said her husband in a recent interview.
Donna made the decision to have her feeding tube removed and died on the morning of April 29, before John arrived at the hospital to say goodbye. Months after her death, the state and Gallatin County health departments concluded an investigation that revealed that between March 28 and April 17, 2023, 50 more people had become ill after eating morels at the same restaurant.
William Lewis, 74, of Toston, Montana, died just one day after eating there on April 18.
