The demonstrations, held on Tuesday, are the latest example of growing tension in the country over spending cuts that are helping to reduce a large fiscal deficit but causing difficulties in the real economy, according to Reuters.

Millay, who is facing an economic crisis after years of overspending by the previous government, is using budget cuts that helped the country post a three-month fiscal surplus at the start of the year but have put a lot of pressure on the public sector.

The Argentine government claims that this is a “political protest”, since the demonstration was supported by some political leaders and trade unions.

The president’s office announced that public education will not be denied, but that the government will continue to insist on auditing the budget of state universities, reports Argentina’s TN.
