Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Wednesday that he was stepping down from public duties because he had to “stop and think” about whether to continue as head of government after a Madrid court opened a preliminary investigation into his wife for corruption and influence peddling.
“I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worth it (…) whether I should continue to lead the government or give up that honor,” the Prime Minister announced via the X social network.
The union “Manos Limpias” (Clean Hands) reported his wife, Begona Gomez, that she helped entrepreneurs at public auctions and took advantage of it. The court announced earlier on Wednesday that it had opened an investigation, without giving details.
Ministers from Sánchez’s left-wing government assessed that it was a false report and that the union that submitted it was close to the extreme right.
