The Great Blue Hole is a real wonder of nature – the largest and one of the deepest underwater holes in the world, located off the coast of Belize, in the Middle America.

The beautiful, almost perfectly circular hole has puzzled researchers since it was discovered, but has remained largely unexplored due to a lack of modern equipment.

The expedition to research this phenomenon, which was financed by billionaire Richard Branson, ended in 2018, and shortly after that, a video of the research surfaced, which has recently become relevant again.

The Great Blue Hole is 300 meters in diameter, while the deepest point is 125 meters.

It was decided that the expedition, which in addition to Branson consisted of Fabien Cousteau (grandson of Jacques Cousteau) and National Geographic researcher Erika Bergman, use a small submarine to achieve the goal.

When they reached a depth of 90 meters, they encountered a layer of hydrogen sulfide that prevented the further development of underwater life. and everything around them went dark. What they found at the bottom completely amazed them. There was a pile of trash, including plastic bottles, as well as someone’s GoPro camera with family pictures.

“The real monsters facing the ocean are climate change and plastic. Unfortunately, we saw plastic bottles at the bottom of the hole, which is a real scourge of the ocean. We all need to get rid of single use plastic. We also found the remains of two unlucky divers exploring the Great Blue Hole. We immediately informed the police and local authorities, and did not touch the remains“, Erika Bergman told later.

The expedition also found evidence that the underwater structure was not always a hole. Namely, a cave system and huge stalactites were discovered on the southern wall.

“It is clear evidence that the Great Blue Hole was once a cave, since stalactites only form in dry caves”explained Richard Branson.

Erika added that they also found “unusual traces” at the bottom, i.e. “circles” that intersected exactly around the center of the hole, but that they did not understand how they were created.
