“Discussions were held yesterday and there is indeed a desire to enter BRICS+ in the near future, which will make it possible to ensure transport and food security and much more,” Lijange told reporters.

According to the ambassador, at the International Security Conference being held in St. Petersburg, two Sri Lankan delegations, led by the First Deputy Minister of Defense and the Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for International Security in the Parliament, are discussing this issue, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the Russian agency, BRICS originally included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but as of this year, the number of members of the association has doubled and the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia have become full members.

BRICS now unites ten countries with a population of 3.6 billion people, and according to RIA, these countries produce more than 40 percent of the world’s oil and about a quarter of the world’s exports of goods.
