BERLIN – China must stop helping Russia in the war against Ukraine if it wants to have good relations with the West, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today, assessing that Beijing’s help was “vital” for Russian forces. He pointed out that China helped Russia the most by providing Moscow with high-end technology such as semiconductors, reports Reuters.
“Of the total amount of electronics imported by Russia, 90 came from China and is used for the production of missiles, tanks and airplanes. China is also working to provide Russia with improved satellite capabilities and imaging,” Stoltenberg said. He assessed that China cannot have good relations “in both directions”.
“China says it wants good relations with the West.” At the same time, Beijing continues to fuel the biggest armed conflict in Europe since World War II,” Stoltenberg said. He warned Western allies not to become as dependent on China as they were on Russia.
“In the past, we made the mistake of becoming dependent on Russian oil and gas. We must not repeat that mistake with China. To be dependent on its money, its raw materials, its technologies – dependencies make us vulnerable,” said Stoltenberg.
China has strengthened trade ties with Russia in recent years, after America imposed sanctions on both countries. Last year, Chinese-Russian trade reached a record exchange of 240 billion dollars, reports Tanjug.
