Today, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning the allegedly illegitimate presidential elections in Russia and “Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine”, held from March 15 to 17, 2024.

Members of the European Parliament call on EU member states and the international community not to recognize the outcome of the elections as legitimate, because, as they state, they were held in the illegally occupied territories of Ukraine and inside Russia, and “were neither free nor fair.”

“This farcical performance by the Russian authorities had the sole aim of creating a semblance of electoral legitimacy for Vladimir Putin, his policy of ruthless domestic repression and, above all, for the war of aggression against Ukraine,” the statement published on the EP website states.

It also regrets that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has decided to withdraw from the EU and congratulates Vladimir Putin on his “fake re-election”.

“Parliament calls on member states to limit relations with Putin to issues necessary for regional peace, as well as humanitarian and human rights purposes, for example, the exchange of prisoners, the return of children deported from Ukraine or calling for the release of political prisoners,” the statement said.

It is added that the EU should express full solidarity with Russian civil society and sanction the perpetrators of human rights violations.

“The members of the European Parliament call on the EU and member states to continue to actively support independent Russian civil society organizations, independent media and human rights defenders and to actively engage and offer support to the Russian democratic opposition,” the statement concludes.

The resolution was adopted with 493 votes in favor, 11 against and 18 abstentions.
