The comments came after Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Monday that his nation would be ready to receive Western nuclear strikes, given Russia’s decision to deploy intercontinental ballistic missiles in neighboring Belarus late last year.

– Our patience is not limitless. If Poland takes the path of further escalation – these verbal games with nuclear weapons – then this means that there will be a further round of tension. This game is very dangerous, and its consequences can be unpredictable – said Ryabkov.

“There may be an apocalypse”

Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov responded to Duda’s statement, stating that the Russian Ministry of Defense will “analyze the situation… and take all necessary steps to retaliate to guarantee our security.”

Amid rising tensions, Russia’s ally Belarus moved its combat-ready troops closer to the border with Poland on Thursday “with a three-hour alert”, he said President Lukashenko – who warned that the exchange of blows could lead to an “apocalypse”.

Belarus is ready to welcome Western forces with a decision to move an undisclosed number of troops south of the Vitebsk region in the north to the southwest, where the country borders Poland and Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko

“They are doing everything to drag our country into conflict”

Lukashenko claimed that the decision was motivated by the increasing threat to national security he made war in Ukraine.

He claimed that 120,000 Ukrainian troops were stationed along the shared border and claimed that “Washington is doing everything to drag our country into the conflictIn December, he also confirmed that Minsk was working with Moscow to host Vladimir Putin’s nuclear weapons, as tensions between the East and the West rise.

The Kremlin justified the decision as a security response to perceived NATO aggression amid its ongoing support for Ukraine.

In an interview published in the Polish newspaper “Fakt” on Monday, Duda said his country — a member of the Transatlantic Security Alliance — would be ready to host nuclear weapons if invited by Western partners.

What do Polish officials say?

Russia recently moved its nuclear weapons to Belarus, Duda said.

– If there was a decision by our allies to deploy nuclear weapons as part of the nuclear exchange and on our territory in order to strengthen the security of NATO’s eastern wing, we are ready – said Duda.

Donald Tusk

But his comments may have been out of control, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk later telling reporters he needed to discuss the proposal with Duda urgently.

– I would also like all potential initiatives to be, first of all, very well prepared by the people who are responsible for them and (I would like) all of us to be absolutely sure that we want it. This idea is absolutely massive, I would say, and very serious (and) I would have to know all the circumstances that led the president to make this declaration – said Tusk.

“We should not be afraid of conflict with Putin, quite the opposite!”

Meanwhile, Poland’s foreign minister yesterday called on NATO to increase its defense readiness and said Warsaw should be at the center of decision-making in the European Union.

Presenting his vision of Poland in the heart of Europe, Radek Sikorski warned that Russia’s attack on NATO ended with Moscow’s defeat, but said NATO must increase its defenses to ensure long-term security.

We – the West – should not be afraid of a conflict with Putin, but the other way around. It is worth recalling this, not in order to increase the Russians’ sense of threat, because NATO is a defensive pact, but to show that an attack by Russia on any of the members of the Alliance would inevitably end in its defeat. Russia’s military and economic potential pales in comparison to that of the West. If we do not lack the will, Russia will lose. Putin’s only hope is our lack of determination – Sikorski said.

Would NATO members allow it?

Three NATO members are nuclear powers: the USA, Great Britain and France.

As part of the sharing program, the US has nuclear facilities located in some allied countries: Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey, for the deployment and storage of weapons.

Seven members of the alliance have dual-capable aircraft that can carry conventional bombs or nuclear warheads and are available for use should such an attack be necessary.

Washington retains absolute control and custody of the weapons it deploys, and would do so if it reached an agreement with Poland to station nuclear weapons there as well.
