Canada will co-sponsor a draft UN resolution declaring July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide

Resolution M-587, adopted by the Canadian Parliament on April 24, 2015, includes the Srebrenica genocide and Srebrenica Remembrance Day as part of the “Genocide Remembrance, Condemnation and Awareness Month” every April in Canada.

Director of the Canadian Genocide Research Institute, Emir Ramić, thanked the Canadian government and especially the Canadian Mission to the United Nations for their continued support and respect for the culture of remembrance of the victims of genocide.

Canadian co-sponsorship will significantly contribute to raising awareness and building a common attitude towards truth, justice, a culture of remembrance and peace.

“Emphasizing the values ​​of empathy, justice and reconciliation, together we can convey an important message regarding the global culture of remembering the greatest crime after the Second World War, the genocide in Srebrenica,” said Ramić.

He pointed out that this is another victory for truth, justice and the culture of remembrance of the genocide in Srebrenica in Canada, and another victory for the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the name of a better future for all its citizens and nations.
