The famous ironworks is shutting down! The giant turns off the blast furnaces, leaving 2,800 people without work

The Indian company Tata Steel today rejected the request of the trade union of the British steel company Port Talbot to keep the blast furnaces at that factory, which will lead to the dismissal of as many as 2,800 workers.

The first blast furnace in that iron workers in South Wales, it should be closed at the end of June, and the other in September, the Guardian reported.

Tata Style announced that on May 15, it will offer workers a voluntary layoff program.

The Indian-owned company in January announced the closure of two of its four active blast furnaces in the UK, a major blow to the Port Talbot steelworks, which is the dominant economic entity in and around the town.

Tata Style plans to replace the blast furnaces, from which steel is obtained by melting iron ore, with electric arc furnaces.

Today, that company intends to order the equipment for the new furnaces by September, as well as to start their construction by August 2025.

Electrification of the obtaining process steel it is much more ecologically clean, because it does not rely on a chemical reaction that creates carbon dioxide.

It will also represent a major investment of £1.25 billion, but the introduction of newer technology will also require far fewer workers.
